From the Towers car park head westwards for about 200m and then left on to the Greenway. Continue up the Greenway to Altamount Street /Fairgreen roundabout. Cross the R330 and proceed on the Greenway to Mill Road across the old railway bridge and skirting playing fields to Castlebar Road. Turn right and cross the N5 at the pedestrian crossing. With Westport town behind continue to the next junction. Turn left onto The Lodge Road (sign for Clogher / Monamore), Continue on this road for 3 Km. Turn right following the sign for Castlebar (Point 1 on map). Continue for 2.5 Km passing sign for Clogher Lake on your right until you reach a T junction (Point 2). Turn right. Continue on this road with views of Islandeady Lake in the distance on the right passing Points 3 and 4. After 7.5Km you reach the R311, the main Castlebar to Newport Road. (Point 5) Turn left to Newport and after 200 m turn right for Bangor (Point 6). Continue on this road until you reach Point 7 on the map. Continue beyond this point until you come to Rest place near Lough Beltra.


After the rest you go back the way you came for a few hundred metres as far as the old red brick Garda station (note this building was made 18 inches taller when rebuilt after being damaged during the troubled times (Point 7 on the map).


Turn right there for Newport along a sparsely populated quiet road (about 7k to the Newport Rd). Follow this road passing through Points 8 and 9. Turn right at Point 10 when you meet the Castlebar / Newport Rd. If you forgot your lunch earlier there are lots of nice cafes and bars in Newport for a cuppa.


You can return to Westport via the Greenway.
